This page belongs to and is maintained by Marshal Anderson as he develops versions of his existing software to run inside the Virtual Learning Environments every school is supposed to have. This will work in two stages; first there will be a web-based version of a package (as you see here) which will run inside any (decent) VLE - once it's working here it will work on your VLE. The second stage is to make it connect with your VLE's SCORM player - the advantage of this is that the package will be able to save pupils progress across sessions. SCORM is clearly The Devil's work and getting anything to run reliably across all flavours of SCORM inside all flavours of VLE is a nightmare of epic proportions, but Marshal is on it like someone trying to ride an extremely angry leopard that hasn't eaten in six weeks.

When complete, in either or both forms, you will be able to purchase the VLE version of the package as part of the site licence.

Stig of the Dump SCORM/JavaScript development

Lots of people seem to have this page bookmarked so I'm leaving it here - please read the following.

Stig of the Dump SCORM version is now up, running and available for your VLE. It has been fully tested on Moodle, Kaleidos, Frog, Sharepoint and Studywiz. Other VLE's claiming SCORM capability should also run it and we will give you any support needed. You can have access to Stig running on Topologika's own installation of Moodle by mailing a request to brian@topologika.com. For more details, vistit the Topologika site.

Save Humanity - come on, you know you want to
Thanks for coming along to try this out for me. What you have is the first stage in SCORMed Stig- which you can try out. I haven't posted anything you can't actually finish, but that doesn't mean that strange things won't happen. It's those strange things I am interested in hearing about. I will keep the games available until August 2008.

The Stig package is aimed at top junior/lower secondary level pupils who have read the first three chapters of Stig of the Dump. You can find out more here.

The Materials
Read the story

You really do need not only to read the first three chapters of Stig of teh Dump, but it's a good idea to have the book at hand.

Download the teacher's manual
This is the manual for the original version, some features will not be available, especially the teacher options.

Download map and Topic Web (remember them???)
The map is for teachers, get the kids to damn-well draw their own. The topic web isn't a great scan, but I hear they're coming back (along with flares and TB) so I've included it.

Play the game...

You can play the game in this window.

or Open a new locked window to play in.

Please e-mail me with comments

If you have a VLE and would like to see if Stig might work on it, the first thing to do is download this file and install it on your VLE. If you can launch it and save data in it then Stig will (ok, should) work on your system.

Here's some help on how you play the game for those of you who can't be bothered to read the manual: (the bits in this colour don't work properly or at all yet)

Stig of the Dump

What you're going to do is try and solve the problems Barny and Stig had to solve in the first three chapters of the book. The game is divided into three different days, each relating directly to a chapter. In each day you need to find a *TREASURE* and hide it somewhere.

To play the adventure you tell the computer what you want to do. You can type anything you want, but remember that the computer only understands about one hundred different words. You will find lots of places to go, people to meet and objects you can take and use in different ways.

If you type something and the computer says it doesn't understand, or that it can't do what you want, try typing your sentence in a different way, or use different words. But, remember that you will need to be carrying certain objects to solve many of the problems - if you can't do something it might be because you don’t have what you need to do it.

Keep your sentences as short and exact as you can. Usually they'll contain one verb and one noun, like this:

GIVE THE COIN

or

DROP THE ROPE

The computer can only do one thing at a time. If you type DROP THE ROPE AND TAKE THE COIN it will only drop the rope!

Always remember to press the <Enter> key when you've typed your words. This lets the computer know you've finished typing.

Some words have a button you can click to save typing. You'll find these on the Word Bar across the middle of the screen.

Here are some words you'll need to know. It would be a good idea to write them down.

SAVE: This lets you save where you are so that you won't have to start again the next time you play, or so that you can save your position before you try something you're not sure of. SAVE will ask you for a name for your saved game. Currently you can save/load a game in one session, but not across sessions.

Use LOAD to go back to a game you've saved. It will show you a list of saved games and you choose the one you want.

INVENTORY or LIST: This tells you what you are carrying.

QUIT: This stops the game and allows you to leave the program.

NEW: This stops the game and starts again from the beginning.

Direction words - NORTH, EAST, SOUTH, WEST, UP, DOWN, IN, OUT - can all be entered by just using their first letter, or by clicking on them on the Word Bar.

Other useful words are TAKE, DROP, LOOK and USE.

If you are stuck, try typing HELP.

The thing that will help you most is a map. You should start making one right from the beginning. It should show all the locations you've been to, the connections between them, and what you found there.

Now you know all you need to start the adventure. Good luck!
